Who says hostels have to be basic?
To stay at Moffat Hostel is to experience an authentic 180-year-old Scottish country house. Entering the lobby, you will find the games room on your right, with its huge bay window, 7-foot pool table, and red leather chesterfield reading chairs. On your left you’ll see the dining room with its old-world charm, and where you might hear a record spinning on the vinyl record player. Next to the dining room you will find our fully equipped kitchen, with complimentary hot drinks and everything required to prepare a hot meal after a busy day!
Take the imposing staircase to the upper floors and you will find that all our en-suite guest rooms are as comfortable as what you would find in most B&Bs or small hotels – and our superior quad room even has a roll top bath with a view of the hills!
Out in the garden you will find plenty of space to relax and take in the fresh country air. You’ll hear the babbling waters of the Birnock Water Burn just over the lane, as well as year-round birdsong in the trees and hedgerows. Finally, in the yard, you will find a lock up garage for your bike, and a drying room to store any wet coats and boots – in the unlikely event of a Scottish downpour…

We can host up to 18 guests in the house, so whilst it never gets too crowded, there are usually other guests around to chat with, over dinner or over a game of pool. At the same time, five of our six guests rooms are private rooms with en suite facillities so you can have as private and peaceful a stay as you choose!

We have all the facilities you need for making the most of Southern Scotland’s great outdoors. Wash your bike in our yard, store your bike or charge your e-bike in our secure double garage, dry your wet gear in our drying room, and browse our fine selection of local guides and maps in our lounge. Make yourself at home in our games room, or put a record on the turntable and delve into our collection of board games!
Flexible and budget-friendly self catering whenever you need it!
Moffat is a great place to dine out as we have an excellent selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants – and Moffat Hostel is only a 10 minute walk from the town square. However, if you’d prefer to take a break, our self catering kitchen is open 24/7 so you can prepare your own snacks and meals whenever you fancy. We also provide free coffee, tea, sugar and milk!

Staying with Moffat Independent Hostel
- Whilst we make every effort to ensure the building is as accessible as possible, note that we do not have a lift. Our dormitory, king double, and superior quad rooms are up one flight of stairs. Our twin rooms and standard quad room are up two flights of stairs. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss accessibility concerns.
- We do not accept dogs or other pets (except service animals) in the hostel grounds.
- Check in is from 4pm on day of arrival, check out is by 10.30am on day of departure.
- You are welcome to bring and consume your own alcohol, but must remain respectful of our other guests. We do not operate a bar at the moment.
- Noise must be kept to a minimum after 10.30pm.
- E-bike batteries must be charged at our charging points in the bike shed, and not inside the house – this is a requirement of our insurance.
- We provide a complimentary bath towel for each guest and a bathmat for each room. Extra towels can be rented for £2 per towel.
